Introduction
“Shen” means “god” in Mandarin. She-N is an interactive narrative game that reimagines forgotten female deities, blending Chinese cosmology with a globally interconnected world. Inspired by Shanhaijing but mapped onto the entire Earth, the game invites players to explore mythic landscapes and extinct species, uncovering erased legacies of female gods. The game challenges patriarchal narratives, weaving folklore and alternate history to reclaim divine feminine power across cultures and time.
This proposed project reclaims lost histories and uncovers the hidden achievements of female champions. Whether through fiction, fairytale, mythology, games, or immersive experiences, my work explores speculative feminism—imagining new possibilities for female roles in contemporary and near-future worlds.
The concept of She-N originated from my abandoned project, The Ancestor Catcher, where a protagonist of Miao descent collects the spirits of ecosystems, ancestors, and deities throughout her diasporic journey across China, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and the United States. This narrative was rooted in my own Miao heritage and encounters with Hmong communities in the U.S. However, as I refined the concept, I sought to expand beyond a single ethnic lens, embracing a broader framework.
