A talk in the 10th seminar, “Game Art: From Rules to Emergent Causality,” as part of the “Complexity Science and Art” series hosted by Swarma Pattern.
Art is often considered an expression of emotions, an attitude, or an unpredictable subjective presentation. On the other hand, game creation relies on rules as tools. Within these guidelines and constraints, can art still be art? This talk introduces classic games and performance/media art, as well as explore recent indie games, interactive design, and collaborative creations with diverse and evolving gameplay. The aim is to delve into the complex interplay between rules, order, inspiration, and emergence in games or gamified works.

Liao Wen’s solo project, The Body Knows Silently, was presented at Caijin Space in Beijing. I remotely moderated a panel discussion, “Into The Hidden Side,” where artists Liao Wen and Chen Zhe explored their creative paths through the themes “body,” “material,” and “space.” This program was supported by Capsule Shanghai.
